The Touareg was Volkswagen’s first venture into the luxury 4x4 market, now the second generation model has consolidated its position in this market. Features such as permanent four-wheel drive, low and high gear ratios, electronic traction control linked to an auto-locking centre differential, hill start and descent assist, a rollover sensor and short front and rear overhangs all contribute to class-leading off-road capability. The most powerful model in the Touareg range powered by its advanced and award-winning V10 TDI engine demonstrated its towing capabilities by hauling a 155-tonne Boeing 747-200. Now the range-topping R50 uses the V10 TDI engine uprated to 350 PS and with maximum torque output boosted to 627 lbs ft (850 Nm).
